A Brief History

A BRIEF HISTORY

The Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in Dickson County Tennessee on February 4, 1810 as an outgrowth of the Great Revival of 1800. In April 1955, a group of three ministers with representatives from the congregations of the Sanderson’s, Russell Hill, Pleasant Grove and Poston’s Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian churches met in Macon County Tennessee and organized the Carthage Presbytery of the Upper Cumberland Presbyterian (U.C.P.) Church. The immediate cause of this organization was the action of the general assembly of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church making their Boards members of the National Council of Churches, an organization which does not conform to the doctrines of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The Carthage Presbytery of the U.C.P. Church originally consisted of twelve churches in Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama.

A commission of Four ordained ministers of the Carthage Presbytery of the U.C.P. Church and two elders from the Pleasant Shade congregation organized the Sumner County U.C.P. Church on December 11, 1994 on the Campus of Volunteer State Community College. In March 1995 the trustees and the congregation of the Sumner County U.C.P. Church purchased the property and building at 1038 Lock 4 Road in Gallatin where we now hold our services. In September 2000 members of the congregation of the Sumner County U.C.P. Church purchased the property and building at 1034 Lock 4 Road in Gallatin. This additional property and building is being used as an educational building and for fellowship gatherings.
